New, Cheaper Ammo

My local Wally World has begun stocking a line of Federal ammunition that is cheaper than the standard Remington. This might not be news to everyone as Wal restocks at different rates. You can get a box of 550 .22lr shells for under $9 before tax. I got rifle shells for around $3 cheaper per box. Even if you don't like the ammo for killing, it makes trips to the range that much cheaper, and as Ponce reminds us all, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!

On another note, I just got some shells in from ammoman.com. They were nicely sealed (airtight) in thick plastic bags, great for storage. I figure I'll shoot about 60% of them and save 40%.

If your a fan of the federal buy it now before they do the price increase. The remington brands hav raised their prices sooner than the federal and winchester. The other two will be close behind. Remington raised their prices (2nd time this year) just last week. The distributor said federal and winchester will be following suit this week. Look for a 10% increase basically across the board, just like remington did.

I prefer remington and honestly, it's good for SHTF just as much as anything else. the other brands I use for target only, excluding the winchester 12gauge anyway.

On a side note: These price increases are pissing me off :y:

One word, Reload. It's cheaper and it gives you something to do when its too crappy out to shoot. The big problem is that you (at least I do) shoot more and burn out barrels faster. Even that isn't so bad when you get it rebarreled with a quality barrel, they do make a difference.

550 rounds of .22lr for 8.95
20 rounds of .270 winchester for 9.95

All from Federal available at my local wal-mart. This beats sportsmansguide by a long shot (pun intended)

That it does, I was refering to the bulk buys though as compared to ammon man and others. That is good for that quantity.

Are they good in bulk? I thought ammoman was the best for that. I got 10 boxes of .270 delivered for $100 even.

If you load all those others then why not .223 and 7.62X39? Is it not cheaper? Or, are factory loads actually pretty good?

Ive had excellent luck with wolf in the aforementioned calibers, Ive been paying around 115 per 1000 till this year, the 223 went up. I dont have time to load them all so my primary concern and love are the pistol rounds, I do have loads of winchester and Federal Ive stocked over time. A lot of guys shoot wolf where I do and they have never had problems, that is basically though 223 7.62x39. I used to load a load of 30-06 but dont shoot that one anymore, too much kick.

Ok, I ask because I'm thinking about asking the wife to get me reloading equipment for this christmas. I don't need that many calibers at them moment, though, so I could probably reload all that I needed.

About how many firings do the brass cases last?

Depending on the load your using, (I load some for accuracy and use low powder loads, some for butt kicking, so Average you should get at least 6/8 loadings from shells, sometimes more, also depends if you keep your dies lubed and what kind of dies you use. I have an rcbs ammomaster has served me well over 15 years, were I to buy today I would consider a dillon as they load faster, I think the 550 if memory serves. Depends on what your budget is.

How do you know that a casing is spent and won't load anymore?

Most times the case actually cracks and you need to look at the cases after a few uses, sometimes they might become elongnated but you can use case trimmers to shorten to proper length, also would be good idea to get tumbler to clean brass, use the fine walnut media, it wont give additional wear to the shells, you can also go to local ranges and pick up sometimes gallons of used brass if you hit it right, wont take long to stockpile thousands of rounds. Definetely study up on the process as you dont want to risk a double load of powder, lyman puts out some good books on loading.

All your info is really helpful -- thanks. I know that there's always a boatload of brass at the range I go to. I'm a yearly member which is the main reason I wanted to reload. I love just going out there and shooting away. I'm a graduate student so I spend a lot of time reading and writing. Shooting is the perfect way to contrast all that stuff. Plus, I could take out my colleagues from 500 yards!

Enjoy, I started with the single old lee loader in the 60s, first loads were 30-06, used to hunt ground hogs, 90 gr, over 3700 fps back then, it's a good hobby and enjoyable, just use common sense and know your powders.

I haven't seen any federal at my walmart except for .22 and shotgun shells.

Winchester has sure jacked up the price lately. 9mm value packs are now $12.88, .38 special and 7.62x39 value packs are now $19.98.

I got .270 winchester and they had all the other rifle sizes (.308, 30-06)

True enough- the Wal in the next town over didn't have them.

Winchester Power-Point Ammo has a $5 rebate per box (up to 2 boxes) running right now through the end of the year. One per address but I'm sure you folks know how to make that work...
